Effect of feeding unconventional cakes supplemented with lysine and methionine to broiler chicks.

140 (1 week old) broiler chicks were divided into 4 groups of 35 birds each in a completely randomized design. Four experimental diets were prepared by replacing (w/w) a standard basal diet on isonitrogenous basis by a formulated cake mixture of 72.5% expeller pressed kosum (Schleira oleosa) and 25% deoiled karanj (Pongamia glabra) at 0 (T0), 9.75 (T1), 19.5 (T2) and 29.25% (T3) level. L-lysine and DL-methionine were added at 10 g per 100 kg mesh in T1, T2 and T3 diets, and were fed for a period of12 weeks. Liveweight gain was significantly low and a decreasing trend in feed efficiency with incremental increasing level of cake mixture in the chicken diet was observed. The haemoglobin level, erythrocyte sedimentation rate and serum calcium and phosphorous levels were unaffected. No histopathological changes in spleen and heart tissues was observed, but a changes were observed in hepatic and kidney cells by inclusion of cake mixtures beyond 19.5% level. It is suggested that the cake mixture supplemented with lysine and methionine could not be included in the chicken diet.
