Variation in skin thickness in different regions of the body of mithan (Bos frontalis), yak (Bos grunniens) and zebu (Bos indicus).

Skin thickness was measured on skin samples from 46 anatomically distinct regions representing the entire body surface of adult embalmed male mithan, yak and zebu (3 of each species). The regional variation in skin thickness was found to be substantial in all the species. In mithan and yak, the skin was thinnest in the groin region and the thickest in the Achilles tendon region. In zebu, the skin at the ear base was the thinnest and upper lip was the thickest. Averaged over the anatomical regions,the skin thickness of mithan, yak and zebu was 0.9917+-0.0446, 1.0224+-0.0346 and 0.4582+-0.0289 cm, respectively. The average thickness in zebu was significantly lower than that of mithan and yak.
