Alltech recently held their 22nd International Feed Industry Symposium in Lexington, Kentucky, USA, with 'Delivering on the Nutrigenomics Promise' as its theme, In this article we will review the main points to come out of the ruminants session that were pertinent to dairy farmers. Even though a presentation by Hughes Guyot and colleagues focused on beef breeding heifers, it had some important underlying messages for dairy producers. They found that when cows were given inorganic selenium (selenite)at 0.1 ppm the selenium levels in them and their calves remained below the 70 mu level considered adequate for good health, but when inorganic or organic selenium was given at 0.5ppm level the levels of serum selenite and glutathione peroxidase were increased and the highest levels were in those cows which had received the organic selenium product, Sel-Plex.
