The first of this new article series based on precis extracts from IMechE papers throws light on the analysis of engine cooling systems involving nucleate boiling. Campbell et al, of Bath University and Ford, point out in IMechE conference paper C496/092/95 that engine coolant passages have traditionally been formed from the void left by features such as valve ports and are hydraulically inefficient as well as being connected to low-efficiency coolant pumps.
