The UV photolysis of HN3has been studied by observing the temporal decay in the number density of the NH(athinsp;1Dgr;) product following photolysis and by observing the temporal behavior of the fluorescence from the secondary photolysis product NH2(quest;thinsp;2A1), both as a function of HN3pressure. The HN3was photolyzed at lgr;quest;290 nm by pulses from a frequencyhyphen;doubled, flashlamphyphen;pumped dye laser while the NH(athinsp;1Dgr;) was probed by laserhyphen;induced fluorescence on the NH(cthinsp;1pgr;minus;athinsp;1Dgr;) band system at 324 nm using a frequencyhyphen;doubled, nitrogenhyphen;pumped dye laser. The data are analyzed to obtain the rate constantsk2=18times;10minus;11cm3thinsp;moleculeminus;1thinsp;sminus;1for the reaction NH(athinsp;1Dgr;)+HN3rarr; NH2(quest;thinsp;2A1)+N3lsqb;Eq.(2)rsqb;, andk4=9.3times;10minus;11cm3thinsp;moleculeminus;1thinsp;sminus;1for the reaction NH2(quest;thinsp;2A1)+HN3rarr;NH2(quest;thinsp;2B1)+HN3lsqb;Eq.(4a)rsqb;rarr; NH3+N3lsqb;Eq.(4b)rsqb;.
