K.F. Jensen has given a perspective on this subject; he has contributed many papers on this subject and many have been covered in this column. Micro-reaction technology has now come of age and many renowned pharma units have adopted microreactors, particularly for exothermic, hazardous, etc. reactions in view of low inventory, high heat transfer coefficients, etc. There is a reference to an example, end-to-end fabrication of pharmaceuticals in a compact reconfigu-rable system which allows on-demand manufacturing. Microreactors have been used for multi-step reactions and API's like artemisnin, imatrinib, efavirenz, pregablin, etc. have seen successful demonstrations.
