Response of Structure with Conventional and Buckling Restrained Braces

Aim of this study is to understand the behavior of Conventional Braces and Buckling Restrained Braces (BRB), its analysis, design and modeling. A nonlinear time history analysis of 5-story 2D frame is carried using finite element program, SAP 2000 under El Cento-1940 earthquake. The response parameters used to evaluate structural performance are natural time period, story displacement, interstory drift, story shear and axial forces. The response of the building frame is evaluated using conventional braces and BRB, considering the geometric nonlinearity (P-5 effects). Brace configurations studied are single diagonal, V, inverted V and cross diagonal type. During the study it is observed that BRB can be modeled by keeping the area of central core equal to half of end offset area and length of yielding central core equal to 1/3 of total length of brace. New brace configuration is proposed to control the response of frame. BRB is effective for overcoming the problems of buckling associated with conventional braces. The predicted response for BRBd frame is quite good, with significant benefits relative to conventional braced frames and moment resisting frames (frame with no braces).
