A new model is proposed to account for the observed enhancement with bilayer fluidity of the shorthyphen;range membrane interaction. It involves spontaneous, although hindered, membranes undulations, whose role is essentially to renormalize the membrane interaction. This effect is shown to enhance the shorthyphen;range repulsion and partially account for experimental results. Relevance of this formalism to other problems of surface science is also pointed out.
