Prior to becoming an EU member state in May 2004 Latvia undertook several measures to comply with the acquis communautaire. The Water Framework Directive (WFD) (2000/60/EC), the key Directive to ensure good status for all waters in use in integrated river basin management, has to be implemented without any transition period. Three main directions for this aim are: coordination of Latvia's water protection legislation within the EU; development of river basin management plans; and elaboration of methodology and criteria for assessment of Latvian water quality with regard to the WFD.
