The yield for the xhyphen; and ggr;hyphen;ray induced oxidation of ferrous ions in acid aqueous solution has been determined for xhyphen; and ggr; rays of effective mean energies from 21 kev to 7.6 Mev. For 60 kvp xhyphen;rays of effective mean energy,Emacr;,21 kev,G=13.1plusmn;0.5 ferric ions produced per 100 ev absorbed; for 100 kvp xhyphen;rays (Emacr;=33 kev)G=14.7plusmn;0.5; for 220 kvp xhyphen;rays (Emacr;=56 kev),G=15.0plusmn;0.5; for Co60ggr; rays (Emacr;=1.25 Mev),G=15.5plusmn;0.5; and for 30 Mev xhyphen;rays (Emacr;=7.6 Mev),G=16.3plusmn;0.6. In each case the energy absorbed in the solution was estimated by means of an ionization chamber.
