Green energy, and energy conservation are major concern for addressing the climate change issues. Worrying about the global warming also necessitates the provision of energy source for the rural people. Think globally; act locally is accepted norm. Decentralised energy sources and decentralized distribution of energy is an optimum way to address this issue. Biomass resources is an extensive with fuels such as forestry residues like various woods, energy crops, manufacturing food waste, coconut shell, bagasse from sugarcane processes and food processing residue all having been used for energy generation for rural application. The objective of this study is to find out the suitable resource to produce combustible gas for power generation. Rural biomass materials such as cow dung cake, cashew nut shell, saw dust and rice husk, are experimentally investigated at 800℃ using gasification technique in a downdraft gasifier. The moisture content of the biomass, air flow rate and pressure drop across the gasifier is calculated. The percentage of combustible gases like H_2, CO, CH_4, CO_2, and N_2 formed during gasification are found. The calorific value of the producer gas for various rural biomass materials was calculated. Experimental results indicate that saw dust is the best suitable biomass for gasifier compared to the other three materials considered. The results also show that pressure drop across the gasifier and producer gas composition increases with increase in air flow rate.
