The 1970s would prove to be a decade filled with both trouble and opportunity for repair shops. The economy would take a nosedive, the U.S. would face a fuel shortage, and according to virtually every ACJ issue that appeared that decade, the federal government would continue to increase regulations on businesses. On the other hand, in the "Editorial Word" column in the January 1973 issue, the editor reported that car and truck sales reached new highs in 1972 and domestic cars topped 9.3 million, beating earlier records by more than a half a million units. What's more, the Federal Highway Administration was continuing to build high-speed expressways. Automatic transmissions were becoming the norm, showing up in more than 9 percent of all new vehicles and more and more drivers elected to have A/C installed. An auspicious start for the 1970s.
