A new bending test for toughness characterization of brittlematrix composites is proposed. The aim is to provide a toughnesscharacteristic which takes into account only the crack propagationfrom the notch tip. It avoids the apparition of a compressive zone inthe composite through applying the load by special grips. This studyaims at dimensioning the specimen so that no compression damageappears. This dimensioning is made through the beam theory. Then anumerical simulation is performed to point out the influence of thenotch on the stress repartition.
