Cement is one of the most important materials in the construction industry and has been used for a long time. Even the Phoenicians and the Romans already knew and appreciated cement as waterproof mortar. Besides the popular Portland cement, there are other types of cement with modified characteristics achieved by various additives. The major raw materials for Portland cement are lime and clay or lime marl. The modern cement industry processes large amounts of this lime marl that is extracted from quarries.
