摘要

The notion that the volume of a sperm head can be calculated by assuming a spherical geometry (as indicated by Lerchl) is incorrect and not valid. A paper by Van Duijn (1957), who first attempted to convert linear measurements of the spermatozoon into surface area and volume estimates, is applicable to the present debate. In this article, the projected head area was calculated using an approximation of the Folium of Descartes:A = 0.73 x L x Bmax, where A = the projected head area, L = head length and Bmax = the maximal head width. An empirical formula was derived for the head volume by modelling the mid-piece as a cylinder, the principle piece as a ribbon and the terminal piece as a cylinder, from this formula the estimated total sperm head volume was calculated as 15.4 mun.
