According to a survey by the Royal Society of Chemistry1, 25 of state school laboratories in the UK are judged as 'unsafe/unsatisfactory'. This equates to some 6,560 schools! There are also some worrying suggestions that the amount of practical work being carried out by school science departments has reduced in recent years due partly to perceived fears over health and safety and the increase in teachers working outside of their specialisms.
