It is shown that two varieties ofPotebniamyces balsamicolaSmerlis cause stem cankers of fir (Abiesspp.). Although identical in their perfect states, the two fungi differ from each other in their conidial states. The conidial state ofP. balsamicolavar.balsamicola, previously described but not named by Smerlis, is herewith namedPhacidiopycnis balsamicolasp. nov.; the conidial state ofPotebniamyces balsamicolavar.boyceivar. nov. isPhomopsis boyceiHahn, which is here transferred to the genusPhacidiopycnis. The genetic connection betweenPhomopsis boyceiandPotebniamyces balsamicolavar.boyceiis confirmed by culture.
