Land use and land cover is an important component in understanding the interactions of the human activities with the environment and thus it is necessary to be able to simulate changes. Proper planning, management and monitoring of the natural resources depend on the availability of accurate land use information. Remotely sensed data especially satellite data can be effectively used in mapping as well as monitoring of temporal changes in land use/land cover. A considerable change (%) in different land use/land cover categories was observed during 1970 to 2006. The some part of crop land converted into built-up and some part of scrub land converted into without scrub land. The overall increase in built-up area was 5.15% during 1970 to 2006. The increase was more during 1970 -1999 (4.15%) than 1999-2006 (0.70%). The increase in built-up area was due to transformation of crop land and waste land. Crop lands also registered an overall decrease of 6.47% in area during 1970 to 2006. The decrease in cropland was during 1970-1999 (7.11%) than increase in 1999 - 2006 (0.64%). The decrease of land covers in to built-up and increase in area was as a result of transformation of waste land into crop land.
