The new health and social care system and how it works

The new health and care system became fully operational in England from 1 April 2013. It is intended to deliver the Coalition Government's sweeping plans for health and social care as envisaged in the hotly debated and oft contentious Health and Social Care Act (Gabbay, 2012). As part of these reforms, NHS England, Public Health England, the NHS Trust Development Authority and Health Education England have taken on new duties and responsibilities. Such is the complexity of these changes to health and social care that the Government has produced a simple guide to the new service for members of the public entitled'The Health and Care System Explained' (Department of Health (DH), 2013).
