Improving quality processes

Across NHS Scotland there are nationally approved nursing and midwifery workforce and workload tools to determine safe, effective and person- and family-centred care. In NHS Scotland 2011, it was agreed that nursing projections were developed with consideration of these tools and the Scottish Adult Inpatient tool was updated. NHS Boards in Scotland must reference the national midwifery and nursing workload workforce planning, as appropriate, in deriving the nursing and midwifery numbers for each clinical area. These tools should be used as part of the triangulated approach incorporating professional judgement with quality measures.Planning ward nursing-legacy or design?, published in December 2002, suggested the need for greater scripting in the practice of nursing and midwifery workload and workforce planning. The report set out a number of points of improvement for NHS Scotland.
