The sprouting of partially stratified yam bulbils was promoted by exogenous benzyladenine, cycocel (CCC) and indole-3-acetic acid and suppressed by gibberellin A3(GA3. Light exposure caused slight suppression of sprouting. GA3raised the content of batatasins but not that of abscisic acid. We suggest that the sprouting-inhibiting actions of GA3and light are exerted by raising the batatasin level in the bulbils. A possible mechanism of the natural dormancy induction in yam bulbils was discussed.
