In 1977, Steve Jobs and the Woz were hawking the Apple II computer (now with color graphics!), A.J. Foyt won the Indianapolis 500 for a record fourth time, and BMW launched the first 7 Series for the 1978 model year. BMW's goal for its all-new 7 was simple: Build a performance-oriented, four-door luxury sedan that was also engaging to drive. North America's base-level 7 Series - E23, as it was designated internally - was the 733i with a 3.2-liter version of BMW's venerable straight-six engine. Output was impressive for the day: 177 hp and 196 lb-ft of torque. A four-speed manual gearbox was standard equipment, but a three-speed automatic could be had for $530.
