The properties of dense flint glasses relevant to acousto−optic applications have been measured for longitudinal sound waves and He−Ne laser light. Some Schott glasses have proved highly suitable for acousto−optic modulators, others for wide−band optical deflectors. Besides typical acousto−optic properties such as sound velocity, figure of merit, and ultrasonic attenuation, thermal parameters such as the thermal coefficients of sound velocity and refractive index were also measured.
