Bear Safety Agency Policies: A Request of Agency Managers

The Division of Wildlife Conservation for the Alaska Department of Fish & Game has recently adopted a policy that mandates wildlife safety training (mostly for bears, but also moose, wolves, and muskoxen) for all Division field personnel. The training program is being developed and involves two parts: (1) firearm safety and proficiency, and (2) understanding dangerous wildlife behavior, preventative behavior around dangerous wildlife, and identifying risk. The safety training curriculum expands on the videos Staying Safe in Bear Country and Working Safe in Bear Country, to include other topics relevant to wildlife safety in Alaska. The policy also recommends the use of bear spray, and proper use of bear spray will be incorporated in the safety curriculum.
