This is the first part of a paper that describes some of the necessary knowledge for the design and application of the Horizontal and slightly inclined Shaftless Screw Conveyors (HSSCs), and continues the discussion about the SSC - also known as "spiral conveyor" - which was started in a previous issue of this journal [11], While this first part focuses on the theoretical study of the HSSC, the second part deals with their quantitative study. The purpose of this work is to develop scientific principles for the calculation and design of HSSCs and to define the limits of their application.
