Reanalyzing some early bandhead data forI2lsqb;B 0uplus;lpar;3Pgr;rpar;rsqb;, an improved value of the groundhyphen;state dissociation energy is found to beD0thinsp;equals;thinsp;12 440.9thinsp;plusmn;thinsp;1.1cmminus;1, differing significantly from the previously accepted value of Verma, 12 452.5thinsp;plusmn;thinsp;1.5 cmminus;1. This result implies that the final state of one of the uv resonance series reported by Verma must have a rotationless potential maximum some 13.1thinsp;plusmn;thinsp;1.4 cmminus;1high. It is further shown that the original electronic assignment of this state as groundhyphen;stateX 0gplus;lpar;1Sgr;rpar;is implausible. A reassignment as0gplus;lpar;3Pgr;rpar;is proposed, and the nature of the0gplus;lpar;3Pgr;rpar;potential is considered.
