Wideband phased arrays present several challenges to the antenna designer. This article addresses the principles of electronically scanned arrays applied to the selection of a radiating element for an array. A new way to compare candidate elements for wideband phased arrays is presented. The technique is illustrated using the Archimedean spiral, equiangular spiral, sinuous and Foursquare radiating elements.
