The Wigner distribution function applied to laser radiation

The Wigner distribution function (WDF) is investigated analytically and then calculated numerically and represented graphically for Laguerre-Gaussian modes and for a laser with annular gain medium. The derivation of the normalized beam qualityM2from the WDF on the basis of second order moments is discussed, andM2is determined for the examples mentioned above.
