When someone shows you a typical process diagram for electronic product development, manufacturing is illus- trated as a box at the end of the process. Many design organizations make the mistake of thinking that collaboration with manufacturing begins just prior to producing the data used to manufacture their product. This practice cannot be further from the truth for companies that produce the most competitive products. Not only do their designers start collaborating with their manufacturing organizations from the very beginning of the design process, but they have significantly expanded the scope of design for manufacturing (DFM) beyond the typical "have I met all the fabrication and assembly rules?"
