A strain of callus tissue fromDaucus carota, which for years formed only roots on a coconut milk containing nutrient, could be induced to form shoots by transfer onto a synthetic medium. Formation of roots and shoots is controllable by manipulation of this medium. While most of the roots develop as typical monopolar organs, the shoots arise from bipolar adventitious embryos which develop in the callus to complete plantlets.
