Aspergillosis in fowls.

During January 1984-November 1990, Aspergillus fumigatus was isolated from the eyes, trachea, air sacs, lungs and abdominal cavity of 30 sick and/or dead fowls from 19 flocks in Nigeria containing 22 361 birds. A. niger, A. flavus, A. terreus, A. restrictus, Cladosporium sp., Rhizopus sp., Mucor sp., and Absidia sp. were concurrently isolated with A. fumigatus. Clinical signs, gross and histopathological lesions observed were similar to those described for aspergillosis. Clinical aspergillosis wasnot very common: of 26 flocks containing 23 463 birds from which samples were submitted for diagnosis, 19 flocks containing 22 361 birds yielded A. fumigatus during the 7-year period, with 10 mortality in 3 flocks.
