The task of the control engineer is to incorporate human purpose into machines. Yet in science, on which our technology is built, purpose does not exist: #x2018;in science, man is a machine#x2019;, whereby #x2018;machine#x2019; is meant a device without purpose. We live comfortably with this contradiction so long as we do not think too hard about it. When we do, its implications are seen to be very far-reaching.
