The European Commission has ordered German steelmaker Salzgitter to repay state aid received by its predecessor companies between the 1980s and 1995 Brussels said the tax aid was illegal under the EU Steel Aid Code. The amount involved is reported to be about DM40m, though neither Salzgitter nor the Commission could confirm this figure. The illegal aid was awarded by the West German government for many years under the 1971 Zonal Border Development Act - a tax incentive for companies situated along the frontier with the former German Democratic Republic and Czechoslovakia.
