In the 1970s, the incidence of DVT in the absence of prophylaxis was 33% in patients having open urologic surgery and 9% in patients having transurethral resection (Table 4.1). The incidence of symptomatic VTE is currently in the range of 0.2-5% and PE is the most common cause of postoperative death.
