Genetics of venous leg ulcer: an indication to priority of varicose veins treatment?

The two main problems in the field of venous disorders are certainly represented, both for severity and epidemiology, by venous thromboembolism (VTE) and venous leg ulcer (VLU). In the last decade, the research in the former field has been characterized by the discovery of several mutations and genetic single nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs), which demonstrated to predispose to a first episode and/or recurrences of VTE. The improvement of genetic information deeply changed the current clinical practice, leading in turn to improved diagnosis, prognosis and prophylactic measures.
