The shedding of accreted water during hailstone growth

AbstractIcing tunnel experiments have shown that loss of accreted water occurs in both the dry and wet growth régimes at ambient temperatures above about −12°C. The loss in the dry growth régime is probably due to splashing while that in the wet growth régime is undoubtedly due to shedding of water from the liquid layer which covers the surface of the accreting object. The latter can affect appreciably the growth rates of hail stones. These data, together with calculations of the collection efficiency, have shown that the structure of the hailstone analysed by Macklin, Merlivat and Stevenson (1970) is consistent with growth in an adiabatic updr
