'Banks', a High-Yielding Blast-Resistant Long-Grain Rice Variety

A new midseason, high-yielding, blast-resistant long-grain rice cultivar was derived from the cross 'LaGrue'// 'Lemont'/1974MU429/3/LaGrue/4/LaGrue (cross no. 19951166), made at the Rice Research and Extension Center, Stuttgart, Ark., in 1995. 'Banks'has been approved for release to qualified seed growers for the summer of 2004. The new rice cultivar was named in memory of Heartsill G. Banks who was the first Director of the Rice Research and Extension Center in 1926. The major advantage of the cultivar, released as Banks, over LaGrue is its increased resistance to common rice blast races. Banks has good milling yields, extremely high yield potential, and stiff straw similar to 'Wells' and LaGrue. The major disadvantages of Banks are a very susceptible rating to kernel smut and a plant height like that of LaGrue. Banks is approximately 3 days later in maturity than Wells and LaGrue and moderately susceptible to sheath blight and straight head.
