We always enjoy kidding around with Anton Angelich, vice president of Sweet Business Unit at Teterboro, N.J.-based Haarmann Reimer. Our meeting this time was particularly appropriate since he and Sherry Genchi, director of sensory and consumer research, had just completed a flavor preference survey of 160 kids aged 6- to 12-years-old, and they were willing to share some of their findings with FOOD PROCESSING. HR routinely conducts this type of research on a fairly large scale with kids. In the last go-around, the kids were asked about their preferences in the salty and savory area. This year, the questionnaire happened to be skewed more toward sweets. "We questioned tweens because they tend to prefer sweet snacks to salty," says Genchi. "It's the older kids who typically prefer salty snacks."
