When the signs of a looming recession became apparent in 2008, many companies believed the most economical way to make cuts was to start at the bottom. For construction specialists, especially those within the ground engineering sector who were the first to experience the tide of economic fluctuations, tough decisions had to be made. Paul Kiss, chairman of foundation and piling specialist Abbey Pynf ord, can see why companies are nervous to spend sought-after budget on graduate training schemes. Firms absorb training and sponsorship costs and are then left exposed to the risk of the student leaving to work elsewhere.
