Flow through apertures connecting two enclosures has been a subject of study for the last thirty years. Early studies were limited to openings in vertical partitions. The fundamental difference between flow through a vent in vertical partition and the flow through a horizontal partition is the stable stratification of the fluid in the former case while the configuration is unstable for the latter. As a result, in flows through a vertical partition, the lighter fluid layers move over heavy fluidlayers with minimal interaction.
