All human activities generate waste. Each person in Ireland generates an average of half a tonne of municipal waste each year according to the latest EPA National Database Report. Industrial construction / demolition and agricultural waste growth also continue to rise. This waste has to be dealt with somehow and somewhere. The primary focus of waste management planning must however be waste prevention and minimization, not just in terms of quantity but in terms of its potentially harmful nature. A further objective is to man- age the waste which is inevitably generated in an environmentally sustainable way by minimizing the overall environmental impact of the waste management system.
