Antibiogram of some bacterial isolates from repeat breeder cows

The samples of cervical mucus of 21 Hariana and 20 crossbred cows maintained at Dairy Farm of Veterinary College, Mathura were examined. The isolation of bacteria and in-vitro sensitivity pattern of various drugs against these isolates were carried out. The bacterial isolates comprised of Staphylococcus sp., Streptococcus sp., Pseudomonas, Anthracoids sp., E.coli, Corynebacterium sp. and some of the untyped Gram positive and Gram negative bacilli and coccobacilli among 14 Hariana and crossed cows with positive infection . Gentamycin was found effective in 92.9 per cent cases. The other drugs followed after gentamycin in Hariana cows were ampicillin, kenamycin and tetracycline in 28.6, 21.4 and 14.3 per cent cases, respectively, whereas, in crossbred cows other drugs found effective were tetracycline, kenamycin, chloramphenicol, streptomycin and ampicillin in 42.9, 42.9,35.7, 14.3 and 7.1 per cent cases respectively. As per drug sensitivity results, 11 Hariana and 11 crossbred repeat breeder cows were treated with intra uterine injection of 2.0 ml gentamycin (40 mg/ml) one day after they were inseminated and it was found that 9 Hariana and 8 crossbred cows conceived. The findings of this study indicate that gentamycin may be the drug of choice in the repeat breeder cows.
