Comparison of different serological tests for detection of bovine herpes virus 1 antibodies in goats

Infectious bovine rhinotracheitis (IBR) caused by bovine herpes virus 1 (BHV 1) is causing considerable concern for livestock industry in various parts of the world. BHV 1 infection occurs not only in cattle but also has been reported to cause infection in goats (Mohanty et al., 1972; Saito et al., 1974 and Tolari et al., 1990). Evaluation of ELISA, PHA and VN tests for detection of antibodies to BHV 1 in vaccinated and experimentally infected cattle was done by Edwards et al., (1986). They found highly significant correlation between ELISA, PHA and VN tests. ELISA was carried out by Florent and Demarneffe (1986) for detection of antibodies against IBR in cattle and they concluded that ELISA detected low levels of antibodies and it appeared to bemore sensitive than the VN or PHA tests, Suresh (1992) in cattle, compared AGID and PHA tests with ELISA and observed that ELISA was more sensitive than PHA test and PHA test. was more sensitive than AGID test. He recommended PHA test as a suitable testfor screening animals for BHV 1 antibodies. Singh et al., (1994) compared Dot- ELISA and indirect ELISA for detection of BHV 1 antibodies in cattle, they found Dot- ELISA to be more sensitive, economical as well as easy to use in the field level. Hence,this work was undertaken to evaluate the efficacy of indirect ELISA, Dot- ELISA, PHA and AGID tests for deteetion of BHV 1 antibodies in goats.
