Biochemical and pathological changes of spontaneous infectious stunting syndrome in broiler chickens

The pathogenic effect of infectious stunting syndrome in broiler chickens were determined by biochemical and pathological studies. Compared with normal-sized broilers from ISS-free farms, the stunted birds had significant increase in plasma protein,globulin and amylase, and decrease in alkaline phosphatase. No significant change was observed in plasma calcium, inorganic phosphorus and pH of intestinal contents. Pathological changes comprised degeneration and/or necrosis of lining cells of proventriculus, intestine and pancreas with cellular infiltrations. In additions, blunting of villi, dilatation of crypts of Lieberkuhn in the intestine: proliferative lesions in the pancreas: atrophy of lymphoid organs with marked depletion and / or necrosis oflymphoidal cells were observed.
