A comparative study of Asava/Aarishta and total solvent extract of some medicinal plants

The conventional methods of preparation of Asava and Aarishta of Ayurvedic system of medicine have poor extractability of plant bioactive compounds due to very low alcoholic content of both the preparations resulted in the curtailment of the therapeutic effects. However, the total solvent extracted herbal material ensured complete extraction of active constituents like alkaloids 816 #mu#g/10 and ml. while ln Asava the alkaloid content was 4.5 #mu#g/10 ml, and in Aarishta 21.9 #mu#g/10ml. This was also supported by bioactivity based study in which solvent plant extracts exhibited more antimicrobial activity as compared to the activity obtained from Asava/Aarishta.
