Studies on biochemical characterization, serotyping, colicin typing and antibiogram of Escherichia coli isolated from poultry

Fifty five strains of Escherichia coli were isolated from 264 samples collected from diseased as well as healthy birds. Both typical and atypical E. coli strains were recorded and characterised on the basis of their biochemical characters, serotyping, colicin typing and antibiotic sensitivity patterns. Serogroups 017 and 'H' colicin are predominant amongst the isolates. Gentamycin and chloramphenicol were found to be the most effective drugs. Transmission of few serotypes from poultry to man and vice versa, along with different aspects of colicin typing are discussed.
