EFFICACY OF HERBAL ECTOPARASITICIDE (AV/EPP/14) AGAINST THE DOG TICK RHIPICEPHALUS SANGUINEUS: IN VITRO AND IN VIVO STUDIES

The efficacy of the herbal ectoparasiticide AV/EPP/14 was evaluated against the dog tick Rhipicephalus sunguimus. For in vitro study .batches of larval, aymphal and adult ticks were treated with different dilutions of the formulation. Mortality of larvae and nymphs was 100% at 1:2 and 1:4 concentrations, and 70 and 67% of larvae and nymphs respectively at 1:3 concentration. Against adult engorged females, the effect of 1:2 and 1:4 concentrations was 100 and 90%, respectively. Fecundity of females surviving 1:4 and 1:8 treatments was substantially reduced. In vivo trial of naturally infested dogs showed that 1:4 concentration killed all the nymphs and 80% of the adults in single treatment and complete control in two applications one week apart. Residual protection up to 15 days was recorded.
