FACTORS AFFECTING SERVICE PERIOD IN CROSSBRED CATTLE

The economics of dairy cattle production depends not only on the level of milk production but also on the other related traits. Reproductive efficiency is one of the most important criteria that determines the lifetime production performance of cattleand profitability of the farm (Verma et al., 1983). The frequency of calving in the life of cow can affect her life time production considerably. In order to arrive at optimum calving frequency, it is essential to optimize the days from calving to nextconception. It is therefore necessary that the dairyman must understand the factors controlling the first calving interval and the influence of first calving interval on subsequent production and reproduction (Colin, 1974). The reproductive and productive traits are inter-correlated (Basu and Ghai, 1980; Patil and Singh, 1980).
