CONGENITAL UNILATERAL NOSTRIL ABNORMALITY IN A NON-DESCRIPT COW CALF

Documentary evidence regarding congenital abnormality of the nostril in cattle is scarce. The present communication records a case of congenital unilateral nostril abnormality in a non-descript cow calf that has been growing pretty well. A local non-descript male cow calf aged about 10 months was brought to the clinic with the complaint of patchy alopecia and distended abdomen for treatment. Patchy alopecia and dermal lesions developed could be due to worm infestation and accordingly Inj. Ivermectin1 ml s.c. was prescribed. On careful clinical examination, most interestingly an abnormal development of nostril was noticed. One nostril was apparently normal and other seemed to be underdeveloped. The tubular portion of the left nostril ended in the upper third of the hard palate. In spite of such problem the calf survived and grew pretty well.
