USA auto sales hit record in 2015

Sales of new cars and trucks in the USA in 2015 reached 17.47 million units, overtaking the 2000 record of 17.35 million units. The gain was attributed to low interest rates, a strong economy, low gas prices and higher consumer confidence. Sales hit record highs despite 2015 being a strong year for recalls, including exploding Takata air bags in many Japanese and USA brands, VW's diesel pollution scandal and failing GM ignition switches.
